Twitter employees experienced déjà vu this week after the social media site made major changes to its user experience.
The company has changed its mind about the decision to make the algorithmically generated “For You” tab the default for users. On Tuesday, Twitter users can once again see a feed of posts from people they follow when they visit the site.
The decision to push the “For you” tab was extremely unpopular, which left many Twitter users confused as to why so many unfollowed people appeared on their timelines. While the “For You” option isn’t going away, the company says the timeline will now default to where you left it the last time you visited.
Currently, the update is only available to users who visit Twitter via the Web. Updates for iOS and Android apps are coming soon.
Twitter first started emphasizing recommended feeds two weeks ago.
The sudden reversal is reminiscent of Blue’s face on Twitter last November. The company paused the Elon Musk-driven project after several trolls began impersonating celebrities and businesses on the site.
However, for some longtime users, the move brings a stronger sense of nostalgia, as the company has tried to push algorithm-based feeds before, only to have users demand changes.
In 2016, Twitter created a version of the “For You” tab. Users didn’t like it, but it took almost two years before the company backed down and brought back the chronological timeline in 2018. And last year, they introduced tabs at the top of the page, labeled “Home” and “Recent”—with “Home” being the default option .
Within four days, he admitted his mistake amid a user revolt and returned to “Latest”
