WBO world cruiserweight champion Lawrence Okolie demanded an “official call” from Richard Riakporhe, and the London rival obliged.
On Saturday, Riakporhe defeated a mutual opponent in Krzysztof Glowacki, ending the Pole in four rounds, two rounds faster than Okolie did in 2021.
The win puts Riakpore in a good position to challenge for the world title. Okolie will first have to go through mandatory defense against David Light, but will enjoy an all-England clash with his fellow Londoners.
“I’m number one,” Okolie said Sky Sports News. “Richard is a fearless man, he is fearless. He doesn’t look at me and say: ‘Lawrence is unbeatable’. He believes in himself, in his skills, in his training.
“But unfortunately I don’t think it will be enough the day I and he fight each other. But that’s my opinion and the only way to find it is to actually get in the ring and make it happen.”
After the victory on Saturday night Riakporhe has asked to be taken in any world championship. “I believe that I am No. 1. I always believe that it is deep in me and [fighting Okolie] it will be a good opportunity for me to prove myself,” said Riakporhe as the two fighters appeared in front. Sky Sports News on Tuesday.
“As long as the business is right, it’s always good to have another title [on the line in the fight] also. Because we can make a great unification war.”
Okolie said: “I respect every fighter. I respect the skills they have. But if someone says they want what you have – your belt, your name, to beat you – as soon as I hear someone say my name. as the track record shows , I’m ready to go.
“The champion has to fight the champion and then the competitors have to die to fight the champion. That’s the energy I want and I’ve always done it,” he said.
“That’s why I’m top level. I can say: ‘Forget all this other stuff. I just want to smoke’.
“When I came looking for the world title, my energy was never: ‘Oh, if the price is right. Oh, if the business is good.’ I just want to fight.
“Don’t say: ‘I’m a fighter if the business makes sense’.”
Okolie demanded: “I want to hear the official news now from Richard, if he is willing. Because I did not feel what he did the other day. When I went to practice, I thought, ‘After I beat my duty, that’s what I can do next if there is no another champion who wants to unite.'”
Riakporhe did not hesitate to accept the offer. “We can do that with confidence,” he replied.
“You know me, Lawrence. I’m a fighter and that’s what I do. I was born to fight so we can make this year happen. If you’re in, I’m in.
“Let’s do it this year. Simple.”
