Gary Neville says it is a “myth” to suggest Tottenham are not backing Antonio Conte in the transfer market and believes they are “on track” this season.
Monday night’s Premier League victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage saw Spurs move within three points of the top four but question marks remain over the future of the head coach, whose current contract expires in the summer.
Conte signed an 18-month deal in November 2021 but has yet to agree a new one and is tipped to leave at the end of June.
Tottenham have won just two of their six league games since the Premier League restarted after the World Cup break but are still three points off the top four. They also stayed in the Champions League and FA Cup.
The club have spent more than £200m under Conte so far and counting Monday Night FootballNeville said he did not understand the “dark cloud” hanging over them.
“I think Tottenham is very lucky to have Antonio Conte,” he said Sky Sports the pundit said. “They got into the Champions League last season, they’ve done the job they wanted, and now they’re just a few points away from the Champions League places.
“From Conte’s point of view, what job will he do now that is better than Tottenham Hotspur? They are in the Champions League and have the most unbelievable stadium in European football.
“They’ve signed Yves Bissouma, they’ve signed Dejan Kulusevski, they’ve signed Richarlison, they’ve signed Rodrigo Bentancur, they’ve signed Cristian Romero. I’ve probably missed someone out but they’ve spent £190m in two windows and that’s not including Kulusevski who is still on technical debt.
“The idea that Spurs don’t support him is wrong. It’s a myth. I think both of them should shake hands, sign a contract for two or three years and make themselves right, because there are some ways they are wandering. The path without an aim as if they are not partners .
“Why isn’t he a partner? Conte got Tottenham into the Champions League, he also came back and was given £200m to get the players he wanted, I’m not sure why this dark cloud appears over Spurs. Tottenham, I’d say they’re on their way that’s what i think.
Conte: Tottenham must be dreamers
Harry Kane scored Tottenham’s winning goal at Fulham to move level with Jimmy Greaves as the club’s top goalscorer and speaking after the game, Conte said he was hoping to have the chance to win silverware with the England captain.
“Of course, I want him to win something important with Tottenham because he loves Tottenham in his heart and it would be nice to win here together.
“It’s important for them to have this record, but I think it can be more important if we lift the trophy.
“I think we have to be dreamers. I say that today should be a starting point for us. Many times, especially after a loss, we can learn more than winning.”
Kane: We want to win every game for Conte
Kane, who scored his 266th goal for Tottenham, admitted it was a difficult time for Conte and insisted the players were behind him.
“Being part of a team, not just the players on the pitch, but the manager and the staff, who are there for each other,” he said. Sky Sports.
“We want to win every game for him. He puts in so much passion and effort in every game, every training session and we want to return him with a victory.
“Hopefully we can use this win as momentum, there are a lot of games to come and we still have a lot to play.”
