How the world responds to a pariah state

Russia has been largely isolated from the global stage following its brutal invasion of Ukraine. However, the international community continues to engage with other countries accused of human rights violations. Which begs the question: what should be labeled a pariah state, and who should decide?

DAVOS, Switzerland – As the world’s political and business elite gathered at the World Economic Forum in Davos last week, there was one notable exception.

Russian public figures and business delegations – once prominent in Swiss mountain resorts – were banned from the forum this January, reflecting the country’s ostracism from the international community following President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

However, elsewhere on the promenade of the famous forum, as on the global stage, other countries accused of violating international law are also represented.
