Information Ministry Paid Itself ¢151k As Covid-19 Allowance For Working During Lockdown – Auditor-General | General News

The Auditor-General, Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, ordered the Ministry of Information to refund 151,500¢ to its own management and staff without approval.

This was revealed in Mr. Asiedu’s audit of Covid-19 transactions for the period March 2020 to June 2022.

The development was reported in 2020 at the height of the coronavirus pandemic in Ghana.

“During our review, we noted that senior management staff and support staff of the Ministry of Information paid themselves GH¢ 151,500.00 as COVID-19 risk allowance for working during the lockdown,” the report said.

President Akufo-Addo at the time had announced several incentives for frontline health workers including insurance and tax exemptions to do their best to prevent the spread of the virus.

To date, some health workers have reportedly not received their share of the stipend.

The latest report questions the basis for such remuneration as it was not approved by the Chief of Staff.

According to the document, the act was “contrary to the above directives of the President and without the approval of the Office of the Chief of Staff.”

The Auditor-General recommended that the amount be recovered from the beneficiary staff and paid into the Auditor-General’s Recovery account.
