Revenue from tourist accommodation increased by 44.6% annually in November 2022, compared to November 2021.
This is according to data released by Statistics South Africa on Monday.
The agency said the biggest contributors to the increase in income from accommodation were hotels, which grew by 55% and “other” accommodation, which grew by 34.8%.
The latter include lodges, bed-and-breakfast establishments and self-catering establishments.
After the October numbers, income from tourist accommodation increased by 54%, economists also predict an increase in the November print, especially compared to the previous year when Covid-19 was still weighing on the hospitality sector.
“International tourism spending remains important for many operators in the tourism and hospitality sector who were heavily dependent on domestic tourists last year when the Omicron strain caused many cancellations by foreign tourists,” said Investec economist Lara Hodes.
However, Hodes added that Eskom’s ongoing and increasing burdens remain an unavoidable risk, hindering optimal activities.
