On January 21st, the Bitcoin logo lit up the Berliner Fernsehturm tower—known as the TV Tower. German Bitcoiners took to Twitter and social media to share photos and videos of the announcement, then shared by prominent Bitcoin Twitter accounts.

The man behind B, a German Bitcoiner called Tilo told Cointelegraph why the idea came to him:

“We just want to call attention to bitcoin! We are fans of Guerrilla actions like this and will stay on track.”

Tilo is the CEO of an event agency that will host this year’s “Best of Blockchain” conference. He explained that the process is simple to set up the display of light: “what do you need a mixer, a power station, a special Bitcoin logo,” in one of the comments. The three had tried the process late last year, “But the beamer they were using was weak,” he said.

This is not the first time that the Bitcoin logo or theme has been depicted on an iconic building. In May 2021 in London, “Fiat is a bubble, Bitcoin is a pin,” described to the Bank of England.

The three have previously projected Bitcoin slogans onto a beautiful Berlin wall and have shared an inventory of the products needed to coordinate the illumination for those who want to try it. However, he stressed that such “advertising” is not technically allowed, so it is best to proceed with caution.

While a Reddit group for Bitcoiners in Germany celebrated the event with a comment chain saying “Noice,” a subreddit for Berliners took a different approach. One commentator criticized the light display as “Light pollution,” while another hoped that “It is [Bitcoin] never caught.” They continued:

“Bitcoin is unlimited and moral turbo capitalism, disguised every six months with a different slogan and motto.”

The price of each Bitcoin now sits comfortably in the $20k range that has been rising since the mid-teens, when network security recently reached its peak. The hash rate, or the number of searches performed by Bitcoin miners per second, recently reached 300 Exahash per second.

In addition, the number of Bitcoin users around the world is reaching millions, while developing countries are starting to research and take advantage of Bitcoin’s decentralized and sovereign properties. In the German capital, Berliners can use Bitcoin to pay for Subway sandwiches via the Lightning Network.
