There was serious concern on Sunday when a train from Warri to Itakpe in Kogi state derailed, leaving many passengers stranded in the forest between Ajaokuta and Itakpe.
The incident comes almost three weeks after gunmen attacked a railway station in Igueben, Edo State, where many passengers were abducted.
Multiple sources said the incident took place in Kogi forest, with many passengers said to have left the train for fear of being taken hostage.
It was gathered that the train left Warri on Sunday morning and derailed around noon inside the forest between Ajaokuta and Itakpe.
Another source alleged that it was a case of sabotage, saying that some of the train tracks could be removed, which could be responsible for the derailment.
While the officer in charge, Paul Sunday could not immediately reveal what happened, as he said he was on his way to the scene of the accident, other sources said the four coaches and the head coach of the train may have been badly affected. .
While the stranded passengers were told by officials of the Nigeria Railway Corporation to remain calm and sit back on the train to find ways to evacuate to a safer place, Kogi Police Public Relations Officer, SP William Ayah, told us. Correspondent that the command has mobilized people to the place to protect the stranded passengers, waiting for evacuation.
He noted that the team from the command was to strengthen the security personnel posted on the train
