MANILA, Philippines – Three years frozen due to the pandemic, the Philippine Basketball Association All-Star Weekend will get its fix when it plays in Passi City, Iloilo, this March.
The league said the two teams will now be assembled through a drafting system by the top two finishers from the fan voting system that opened on January 25.
“What we are trying to do is a new format. We used to do North versus South. Now, the fans will choose 24 players and the top two finishers will be the football captain (for each team),” said commissioner Willie Marcial in a short presser Sunday night during the NorthPort-Converge game at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
The two employers will separate the other 22 finalists in a draft that will be televised after voting ends on February 15.
“For the coaches, also the fans will vote. The top two finishers will (call the shots),” Marcial said.
Also returning are Skills, Slam Dunk, and the Three Point Contest. The Rookie-Sophomore contest is also set to revive with teams bolstered by important third-year players and celebrities.
Fans, according to Marcial, can vote on the league’s website and through official social media platforms and can nominate any player – once per device per day – regardless of their position.
The last time the PBA held its All-Star weekend was in Calasiao, Pangasinan, on March 29, 2019. The highlight was the North All-Stars winning over the South, 185-170. Japeth Aguilar of Barangay Ginebra and Arwind Santos of San Miguel Beer were named the Most Valuable Players of the duel.
