The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) invited teams outside the Philippine Football League (PFL) to compete for the first time in the Copa Paulino Alcantara, the country’s top domestic cup competition.
Plans for nine non-PFL clubs to take part in the tournament named after the last great Filipino, who played for Barcelona, to put into effect a plan that has been in the works for the past few years.
“The upcoming expansion of the Copa Paulino Alcantara is the shot we need to boost the domestic club football scene. More teams means more matches and football experiences,” said PFL commissioner Coco Torre.
Previous editions only saw PFL clubs participating in the Copa, but Torre has been working on the idea of allowing people from the ranks or teams in the Armed Forces to participate.
Like Iloilo won in 2018 and 2021, Ceres-Negros won the 2019 edition while United City won the 2022 title.
The Copa is different from the PFL, which is run by teams that have met PFF’s club regulation standards with championships being contested in a round-robin format.[The] PFF is sending invitations to qualified and interested clubs/teams in the coming weeks in preparation for the cup season. A workshop will then be held to discuss all issues of the organization of the match,” the PFF said in a press release.
Sixty matches are underway for the season scheduled for June to September.
