Man City fought back to beat Tottenham in a thriller

Manchester City beat Tottenham with a comeback at the Etihad Stadium to close the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal to five points.

Spurs looked to be in the mood for north London rivals Arsenal as they scored twice in the closing stages of the first half to leave Pep Guardiola’s side with a third straight defeat.

Dejan Kulusevski gave Spurs the lead seconds before the break after Rodrigo Bentancur robbed Rodri after Ederson’s poor clearance, then Emerson Royal headed in the second after the City goalkeeper could only parry Harry Kane’s shot.

Most at the Etihad Stadium were frustrated but City, inspired by the outstanding Riyad Mahrez, came out after the interval to turn the game around with three goals in 12 minutes.

Julian Alvarez scored from close range after Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris couldn’t clear Mahrez’s cross in the 51st minute and Erling Haaland headed in from close range two minutes later to draw City level.

Spurs almost won again when Ivan Perisic’s shot was deflected onto the woodwork by Rico Lewis before Mahrez completed City’s comeback, winning a challenge before beating Lloris at close range.

The French veteran was wrong again after an own goal gave Arsenal a derby win on Sunday.

Mahrez completed a fine individual display when he raced in stoppage time to finish Lloris well for City’s fourth.
