Police are investigating a viral audio that claims officers planted narcotics in civilian vehicles and demanded bribes
The Ghana Police Service says it is investigating an alleged narcotics incident involving some officers of the service, whose identities have not been released.
The investigation follows allegations of planting narcotics in civilian vehicles, by several police officers on patrol. Police gave his name as Dr Patrick Asiedu.
In a police statement, the Service said checks at the East Legon and Accra Central police stations, the Narcotics Control Authority, and the Ghana Armed Forces, did not reveal any records of the case.
Meanwhile, a voice is heard on the tape stating that the matter was reported to the Police station and a statement was taken.
Furthermore, the audio contained, the Narcotics Control Authority conducted a fingerprint test on the substance which provided evidence as fingerprints could not be traced to the substance.
The male voice alleged in more than nine minutes of audio that it is after the fingerprint test that the police officer who previously asked him to pay 20,000 Ghana cedis as a bribe to avoid prosecution, admitted to put the substance in the car.
Meanwhile, the Police are continuing to investigate and are appealing to the public to come forward with information to assist the investigation.
