Germany records over 280 attacks on police, fire services in one night

At least 282 attacks on police and fire brigade personnel were recorded in Germany on New Year’s Eve, newspapers reported on Wednesday.
At Tagesspiegel every day said it had examined all 16 interior ministers of the German federal state.

Some states such as Hesse and Baden-Württemberg do not provide figures for attacks on emergency services, suggesting that the actual number may be higher.

The highest number of attacks was reported in Berlin.

In the capital, police confirmed 59 reported attacks on police officers and 43 on fire and rescue services.

This led to 145 arrests.

The violence in the New Year sparked debate over whether there should be tougher punishments for offenders.

Justice Minister Marco Buschmann said in response that enforcing the current law should be a priority.
