A heat wave is expected in the north-east of the Western Cape and the north of the Eastern Cape on Wednesday, warns the South African Weather Service (SAWS).
The heatwave is also expected to continue until Thursday in KwaZulu-Natal.
“Prolonged exposure to the midday sun poses health risks, dehydration and heat stroke,” the weather service said.
Some tips for beating a heat wave, according to ER24:
- Stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
- Keep an eye on babies, parents and children. Make sure they stay hydrated too.
- Remember that pets have a cool place to relax and drink clean and fresh water.
- Try to keep it out of direct sunlight.
- Wear appropriate clothing and make sure you use sunscreen.
- Limit participation in outdoor activities. If you plan on participating in outdoor activities, make sure you rest and stay hydrated.
- If you are going to spend time in the pool, ensure the safety of the children around you.
- Make sure they are supervised when around and in the pool.
- Do not leave children and pets in the vehicle, even with the windows open.
The weather service has also issued an alert for very high fire danger in the north-west and central parts of the Northern Cape as well as the extreme west of the North-West.
