Dermot Gallagher dissects the big refereeing flashpoints from the weekend’s Scottish Premiership and League Cup action.
Celtic 2-0 Kilmarnock
INCIDENT: Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis takes on Joe Wright in the League Cup semi-final.
Verdict: punishment
DERMOT said: The clue here for me is the ball. Where is the ball? There is no ball in the picture when contact is made. Giorgos Giakoumakis has taken a big risk and he got lucky.
Rangers 2-1 Aberdeen
INCIDENT: Aberdeen captain Anthony Stewart was sent off for a challenge in Sakala Fashion.
Verdict: Red card
DERMOT said: It’s the sheer intensity and aggression of the tackle. If you look at it from another angle, it really drives him away. I don’t think there can be any complaints. I watched this game, and I saw that he told the referee that he got the ball. He didn’t get the ball but even if he did, it would have been just an added bonus.
INCIDENT: Aberdeen’s Liam Scales went down after an off-the-ball clash with Rangers winger Ryan Kent.
Verdict: Yellow card
DERMOT said: This is a tough one for the referee because it’s behind him. VAR looked at it, but I don’t think Kent swiped as Liam suggested. He flicks out at him, but does not punch. If the referee had seen it, I think he would have given a yellow card, but I don’t think he would have given a red card.
Hearts 1-0 St Mirren
INCIDENT: St Mirren were denied a late penalty when Scott Tanser’s cross hit the arm of Hearts defender Kye Rowles in the box.
Verdict: punishment
DERMOT said: He’s lucky because we see when you stick your arm out like that, we see week after week, it gets punished. Why don’t they have an angle to say whether it actually hit the arm, I don’t know, but looking at the replays you will say the player is lucky.
