Continental Europe impressed in Sunday’s singles to win 14.5-10.5 over Great Britain and Ireland in the inaugural Heroes Cup in Abu Dhabi.

Francesco Molinari’s team have a two-point advantage at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club on the final day of the three-day contest, which was introduced with the aim of giving the team more experience before the players can feature in the European Ryder Cup team.

Molinari secured the opening point in Sunday’s singles when he beat Shane Lowry 3&2, with Continental Europe winning six of 10 matches over the final day to run out deserving winners.

“It’s great — I can finally relax,” Molinari said. “I’m very happy for the guys. It’s very easy to guide them and be the captain for them. I think we found a good pair and it’s been a good week to start the year.

“It makes my job easier because I don’t have to tinker and change so much. It’s a great event, we’re very happy, the DP World Tour has done a great job setting it up. golf is great.”
