NGOs are concerned about the rise in mentally ill pregnant women
PROMACH Foundation, a non-governmental organization is concerned about the trend where mentally ill women walking the streets of the Central Region get pregnant without a husband.
The NGO said the trend has led to an increase in orphans as most of the children born from the act end up in orphanages.
The foundation believes that some basic problems such as economic needs, social frustrations, etc. contribute to most people developing mental health.
In the last quarter of 2022, organizations such as Hope Children’s Village have recorded 6 cases of mental health patients who became pregnant.
Talk to Citi News after holding a party for Desa Anak Harapan a subsidiary of Desa Harapan in Gomoa Fetteh Ayegre Martias Anaba, one of the founders of the Adolescent and Child Health Foundation (PROMACH) showed that there is a need for the government to pay critical attention to mental health issues.

He added that more must be invested in the region to ensure that the war is won against the menace.

“The causes of mental health are many, and they include social frustration, economic needs, and most importantly depression that ultimately causes people to have mental health problems. The government must take the right basis, in order to deal with the threat. Some people get pregnant and throw them away because of mental health and some of those children are in orphanages,” said Ayegre Mathias Anaba.

He noted that orphanages such as Desa Anak Harapan have received children born from such circumstances.
The Co-Founder is optimistic that improving the country’s economic status will go a long way in reducing mental health issues.
On his part, Samuel Addo, Managing Director of Kampung Anak Harapan, one of the facilities that receive children born to mentally ill women, indicated that the trend is increasing in the area.

According to him, he received more than six children from mentally ill pregnant women who gave birth in 2022.
“Last year [2022] we only received over six children born from mentally ill pregnant women and this is worrying. People who take advantage of mentally ill women and I don’t know if some are for ritual purposes because no one in the right frame will impregnate a woman in that situation.
“Some women are not angry either, but have psychological problems and people take advantage of them,” said the Chief Director of Hope Children’s Village. Citi News.
The director of the orphanage further urged the women not to abandon their babies during childbirth, because the children are not at fault.

“If you give birth to a child, and do not have the means to take care of the child, ask the social welfare office. I’m sure he has a way to help that person. Don’t hurt the child,” asked Mr. Osei.

The PROMACH Foundation then donated food items to the Children’s Hope Village and also provided clothes for the children with African prints.
