Western countries prefer Ghanaian nurses and midwives – UPNMG President

Mr. Yeboah explained that the high level of professionalism shown by Ghanaian nurses/midwives explains why countries in Europe have prioritized it.

Explaining further why countries in Europe prefer Ghanaian nurses/midwives, Mr. Yeboah pointed out that cheap labor is not a factor.

“That [the exodus of nurses] earn nothing for doing cheap labor. A very hardworking and professional Ghanaian nurse,” Mr. Yeboah said.

“When you visit the wards, the kind of professionalism you see from the trained nurses is incredible, so when you travel abroad, the kind of service they provide is fantastic.”

“Even if you go online, most of them give their criteria for selection, saying they want West African nurses, specifically Ghanaian nurses.”

“It means we’re doing something extraordinary.”

Explaining why Ghanaian nurses seem to be unhappy at home, Mr. Yeboah pointed out that inadequate resources and lack of better service conditions are the main factors that prevent some nurses from giving their best.

However, Mr. Yeboah emphasized that despite the discomfort, most Ghanaian nurses/midwives often try their best.

Mr. Yeboah expressed concern over the poor service situation of Ghanaian nurses/midwives, indicating that if it is not addressed in the long run, it will result in the situation of our specialists disappearing in the West.

To improve the level of professionalism of Ghanaian nurses and midwives, Mr. Yeboah stated that the UPNMG provides:

· Continuing Professional Development (CPD),

· Loans for members who want to further their education.

Mr. Yeboah further clarified that UPNMG is only trying to improve the condition of service/welfare of Ghanaian nurses and midwives and this group has no competition with the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).
