Malawian police have arrested two women in their 20s after they used kwacha bank notes as decorations for cakes they had baked and posted on social media.
A police spokesman said the couple posted pictures of a cake decorated with 70 500 kwacha notes – worth $35 (£28) on social media while advertising their cake-making business.
The accused did not comment on the arrest, but police said they would be charged with “damaging and violating the law using currency”.
In the past, Malawi’s central bank said it would cost a lot to print new bank notes to replace obsolete notes and blamed invalid notes as one of the reasons the notes needed to be replaced regularly.
The offense of “damaging and using illegal currency” carries the maximum fine.
Akutitu Police in Blantyre arrested two bakers who decorated cakes and had k500 sate fafu sazande (mwk35,000) banknotes. My question is, what’s the point of a baker?🤔🤔 pic.twitter.com/rpj9LDq7FG
