King Charles and Prince William made their first public appearance on Thursday since the release of Prince Harry’s memoir – which boosted sales but apparently dented their once-strong popularity.
Charles chatted with well-wishers but made no direct comments about the new furor over the book when he came to visit the Aboyne Community Shed in a village in Scotland to meet representatives involved in local support groups.
The low-key trip, the monarch’s first public event of the year, is in stark contrast to the high-profile coverage of his young son’s memoir, which comes a month after the release of a six-part Netflix documentary series about Harry and his wife, Meghan.
Also on Thursday, William and his smiling and happy wife, Catherine, who Harry also criticized in his book, made their first appearance since the memoir was released on Tuesday, to a hospital in northern England. Nor did he make any general reference to the saga.
So far, Buckingham Palace or aides to royals have not commented on Harry’s disclosure.
In the book spare and TV interviews leading up to the official release, Harry made several accusations against his father, older siblings and other members of the royal family.
The first three episodes of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Netflix docuseries are no bombshells, but they still don’t paint the royal family in a flattering light. However, they mainly took aim at the tabloid press, which the couple said fueled racism.
