30% salary increment is good although we wanted more – TUC Boss | Social

Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Dr. Yaw Baah thanked the government for the 30 percent salary increase for public sector workers.

He said he expected a higher than that, 30 percent, to help the workforce work hard to recover the economy before the Covid outbreak.

Speaking after the announcement of the increase in Accra on Thursday, January 12, he said “Even if 30 percent is not what we want, it will create an opportunity for us to be able to speak one language and work together to ensure that our country recovers. where we were before Covid.

“On behalf of my people, I would like to thank the government for this offer, thank you very much.”

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta also thanked labor organizations for working with the government to secure a 30 percent salary increase.

He said that the government wants to ensure peace in the labor front, hence the 30 percent increase.

On Thursday January 12, the Minister of Labor and Labor Relations Ignatius Baffour-Awuah announced the increase in a meeting with the trade union.

The increase will take effect on January 1, 2023.

Mr. Baffuor -Awuah said “Since August last year, we started a meeting to determine the basic salary for 2023.

“This is after July, we are working together to give a COLA of 15 percent, which is a relief for the hardships of Ghanaian workers. We hope to have concluded this negotiation by December 2022.

“Unfortunately, we couldn’t finish but thankfully, today, we have worked together to come to a conclusion.

“I am pleased to announce the results of our engagement. The basic salary has increased by 30% for the financial year 2023.

“The effective date is January 1, 2023. As I said, this ends the 2022 COLA of 15% of base salary.”

Addressing the meeting after the announcement, Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta said, “As I said this will reduce the budget, but we are confident that it will increase productivity and the commitment we have given each other to ensure that there is peace in this country as we look pension and labor issues. I think we have come to a satisfactory conclusion.

“I would really like to thank all of you for your commitment. The fiscal implications, of course, we have to work on, but actually, the issue of a peaceful environment for us to work on is something that we respect, we really respect you.

“There are many things that we have to do and we really encourage us to move forward with a sense of unity and if, as a people, we continue to speak the same language, then nothing will be impossible. we do it.”
