The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Colonel Hameed Ali, has made it known to the senate that the Nigeria Customs Service does not have a single laboratory where they can carry out sample tests products.
He said due to the absence of laboratory to carry out sample tests, the Customs often hire the services of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), and the University of Lagos.
Recall that the Customs Services once told the Senate that its Scanners were not functioning, resulting in the use of physical examination which is a more cumbersome process.
In 2013, the Customs Service also inherited a $120 million scanner from Cotecna, SGS Scanning Nigeria Limited and Global Scan System, Nigeria. It was later discovered that all the inherited scanners were not functioning thus making it necessary to use physical examination for every item and cargos checked by the Customs Service.
