About 3,600 children has been jailed by Nigerian Forces for ties with Boko Haram and other terrorist groups.
However, the Human Rights Watch has expressed their concern for the jailed children. In their statement they pointed out that the Nigerian government should comply with the United Nations Security Council recommendation to immediately release the children from the military custody to civilian authorities.
Last year, a Human Rights Watch investigation carried out shows that some children were detained by security forces, while some were beaten, left with severe hunger and maltreated in overwhelming heat and overcrowded conditions.
Between 2017 to 2019, the security forces had released about 1,591 children from detention while the current number of detained children is still currently unknown.
