Saad Lamjarred, a Moroccan star singer, has been found guilty of raping a young woman in France and sentenced to six years in prison.
Lamjarred, 37, showed no reaction after the verdict was announced by a court in Paris on Friday, French media reported. He was immediately arrested.
During a brief trial, he denied sexually assaulting the woman in a Paris hotel in 2016.
Lamjarred is famous in the Arab music world. LM3ALLEM’s hit has been viewed over one billion times on YouTube.
When Lamjarred was arrested in 2016, Morocco’s king – who bestows the country’s highest national honor – intervened to cover the singer’s legal fees.
Many of the singer’s fans say he is the victim of a “plot” by neighboring Algeria, which has damaged relations with Morocco.
And the first song released after the arrest, dedicated to the king, shows just how popular he remains, getting over 140m views.
It is unclear whether he plans to appeal the verdict.
